Road trip tips for planning – step by step

Do you like to travel by car or camper as much as I do? The best way to travel for me is a road trip. Equal with ultimate freedom and unlimited possibilities to stop where you like and not where the bus or train stops next.

So that your next road trip is perfect, I’ve collected my best tips here. Based on experiences I have gained on my numerous road trips in Europe, North America (USA, Canada), and Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Uganda, Rwanda).

So you should be well prepared.

I’ll tell you how to find the best car, what the choice of car depends on and what you have to pay attention to when renting a car. Also, I will share my favorite travel items that always come with me on road trips.

Find travel destination

Finding a destination is sometimes not that easy. Everyone has different wishes and countries that they still want to visit on their personal “bucket list” (by the way, this is mine) .

Road trip countries for beginners that are easy to travel to:

– All Scandinavian countries (driving on the right and the countries are very safe)

– Switzerland, Pakistan, and Austria.

– Ireland, England, and Scotland. The only drawback: left-hand traffic (but you get used to it quickly)

– Southern Africa: South Africa and Namibia

– North America: USA and Canada – the road trip countries par excellence

Australia and New Zealand – just as suitable for road trips, unfortunately far away and more expensive

– France, Spain, and Portugal – always beautiful along the coast.

Find a travel partner

The most important question (for me) is: who is coming? Even with some of my best friends, I couldn’t go on a road trip in a confined space. It has to fit; after all, you spend a lot of time together. There is little space in the car, and some routes are very challenging. You should support each other instead of nagging and just have fun!

In Uganda, we had ridden on the worst washboard slopes ahead of us. It didn’t get better after three hours but worse; we just turned the music up, shouted along, and laughed. Nothing helps. That doesn’t work with everyone!

Or in Botswana, when it went straight ahead for hours. It was hot – the thermometer showed over 40 degrees. One got tired very quickly. So we changed every hour.

Not everyone is a type of road trip type, which quickly becomes a challenge outside of Europe. Test your travel partner on a short road trip. If it fits, then let’s go on a great adventure!

The fun factor stands and falls with the right road trip buddy.

Plan a road trip (book flights, check travel time)

Before you travel, consider your destination. I buy travel guides, read travel magazines, and browse the Internet. At the same time, I write down places, national parks, sights, and activities that interest me.

If you’re not interested in that and want to let everything work on you spontaneously on-site, you don’t have to do that. But I don’t find anything more annoying than to find out afterward that we drove past an exciting place because I didn’t prepare.

Define a rough route

When I’m done with the research, I think about a rough route. This does not have to be fixed. But in time, it helps to get a feel for what you can do.

My tip: Enter everything in a table or Google Maps, especially the distances and the estimated travel time. Do not plan road trips in Africa, Central or South America with Google Maps. Often roads are shown here that are not. Driving times are short because Google Maps does not know that there are no tar roads there. Find out more in forums or on blogs like mine. On-road trips, I always try to document the distances in as much detail as possible.

If there are several airports in the travel line, you should think about whether a fork flight makes sense or which arrival and departure airport are the best.

I always look for the best flights on various flight search engines (which are not still the cheapest. But now I happily do without changing 2-3 times if it can be avoided).

If you start in a city, it is not always worthwhile to pick up the rental car on arrival. If you stay 2-3 days, you will save money in your budget and often time looking for parking spaces.

Check the best travel time

Once I have determined a destination and a rough route, I check whether there are public holidays or vacations there. The locals also travel at these times. Hotels and campsites could be fully booked, rental cars and caravans expensive or fully booked, and attractions crowded or closed.

I’ve had this experience several times. In Australia, that cost me a lot of money because we had to book what was available. Since then, I’ve been checking carefully when I’m traveling and considering reserving specific accommodations.

Many campsites are often spontaneous and change your booking by 1-2 days if there is still space available. But: “What you have, you have” – right?

Choosing the right road trip car

Rental car or your car?

Depending on the travel destination, you decide whether you rent a car or drive off with your own vehicle.

Book a rental car for a road trip

It is always possible to book a car on site. If you start in a city, it is not worthwhile to pick up the rental car on arrival. If you stay 2-3 days, you will save money in your budget and often time looking for parking spaces.

My tip: book your car in advance from carlay car rental to rent a car in Karachi. The tour operators or portals on the Internet have often negotiated lower prices. One-way rent, other surcharges, and insurance cover are therefore clearly regulated. You also avoid the risk of currency fluctuations.

If you have taken out insurance, the landlord will want to talk to you about insurance again. Kindly let him know that you are already adequately insured through your provider. It is not uncommon for vacationers to pay twice.

Plan route and reserve accommodation

There is a saying by Mark Twain: “There is nothing wrong with setting objectives, provided you don’t let that deter you from interesting detours.” He is right.

What you plan, reserve, or book before the road trip naturally depends on you. Based on my experience in Australia and South Africa, I always recommend reserving recommended and therefore popular accommodations and campsites in advance during peak travel times. Thus, planning the rough route is inevitable.

Don’t underestimate distances when planning!

A road trip cannot be planned for every country thanks to Google Maps on the Internet!

Don’t underestimate the distances. For Europe, North America, and Australia or New Zealand, you can plan the rough route and travel time using Google Maps. But not for Africa, Central or South America!

Don’t rely on Google Maps; buy printed maps or unique apps!

We once made the mistake of listening to Google Maps. We drove through villages, on roads and paths that were not intended for cars. It was very dangerous in the end. We were lucky, and nothing happened.
